Questions and Answers

Is this ultrasound safe?
Ultrasound has been used for decades in the obstetric setting. While no harmful effects from the responsible use of ultrasound have been proven, the American Institute of Ultrsound in Medicine (AIUM) along with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) openly discourage the use of ultrasound unless medically necessary. Prenatal Imaging believes in the safety of ultrasound and it should be used with in the parameters which have been proven safe over the years. Any concerns you may have should be addressed with your physician. For more information regarding the most recent studies on ultrasound, visit OB-Ultrasound Top

At what point in my pregnancy should I visit?

We recommend between 18 and 36 weeks gestation. Between 18-26 weeks more of the baby can be seen at once. At 27-34 weeks facial features can be seen. After 34 weeks space can be an issue, and the more difficult it is to get good 3D images. Multiple pregnancies should make their appointments between 18 and 27 weeks gestation due to the limited space between babies. Gender can be determined after 17 weeks. Top

What factors determine the quality of the images?
A. The fetal position plays a key role in obtaining good quality images. Some hide behind their hand and feet, some face the uterine wall or placenta. Prenatal Imaging strives to obtain the best images of your babies face and we do all we can to turn the baby the way we need. Obtaining the full face straight on is not very common, so we encourage you to enjoy all of the crazy positions your baby prefers to lay and be amazed at your miracle in the making.
B. The maternal body tissue plays a role in obtaining good results as well. The more tissue the sound waves need to travel through the less contrast the images have. For the fuller figured mom, we recommend scanning late in the pregnancy, 30-34 weeks. Top

Why is 2D ultrasound offered?
2D ultrasound is good for attaining gender, fetal position, placental location, heartbeat and activity. We perform regular ultrasound (2D) from 16 weeks to term. 2D ultrasound is still regarded as the standard in prenatal care. Top
